Those looking to learn more about the history and names of Calvert’s past might want to take a look through Kevin Reddigan’s newest book.
Reddigan grew up in Calvert, and can trace a lot of his own family’s history to the community. Although he now lives in Conception Bay South, the author retains a great fondness for what was once called Caplin Bay.
Three young women from the Southern Shore were top winners among the 33 competing at the 2019 Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Leadership Program Awards Gala on Nov. 4.
Kathleen Murphy, 17, of Tor’s Cove was crowned Miss Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador 2019-2020.
If you love local sports and nostalgia, the Southern Shore Folk Arts Centre in Ferryland was the place to be Saturday, October 26, as members from the sports community from as far as Argentina and Bell Island gathered to celebrate 50 years of Ferryland Flyers hockey and softball.
Long time Goulds farmer Hector Williams was inducted into the Atlantic Agriculture Hall of Fame this October.
Born in 1945, Williams is a staple of the province’s farming community.
He helped establish the Milk Marketing Board, now know as the Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, which was essential in securing supply management for farmers across the province, amongst other accomplishments. He served as director of that board from 1999 to 2016, as well as a representative on the Federation of Agriculture and Agri Adapt Council.
Mount Pearl— Southlands NDP candidate Anne Marie Anonsen told The Pearl that she has two responses to the question posed at the door, ‘why should I vote for you?’
“I think I have been doing, all my life, work that has led me to here and now. I have been championing for people all my life. I’ve gotten really used to finding out what’s the real problem that’s stopping this person. It’s always almost political.
“I know what people are up against. I know that fixes are possible. And I really know that those fixes are in the 109 pages of commitments that Jagmeet Singh is putting out there.”
Students from Dunne Memorial Academy were in Carbonear Oct. 10 for the annual Harvest Run, joining 1,100 students representing 32 schools across the province.
There were six students participating, a good showing from a school with an enrollment of less than 100.
“I am so proud of all competitors; excellent results from a small school,” said teaching and running coach Karen Hearn.
A Goulds pharmacist has been recognised by the Pharmacists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL) as the province’s pharmacist of the year.
March is Pharmacy Awareness week and the PANL have a campaign where you can nominate your pharmacist as Pharmacist of the Year.
Pat Williams was notified by PANL near the end of August that he was this year’s winner, but had to keep the secret close to the chest until the gala awards banquet on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Southern Shore is rallying together to raise funds for a young man known for his dedication, work ethic, and friendly personality.
Andrew Coombs, 19, suffered a fractured vertebra while swimming on July 13. It left him paralysed from the shoulders down. Due to the severity of the injury and the limited care available in Newfoundland and Labrador, Coombs has to attend an out-of-province care facility for rehabilitation.

Brianna Frizzell-Ryan from the Goulds is representing Canada on the international pageant stage.
She was crowned 2019 Miss Teen Canada Petite in a pageant at the end of August.
She spent 11 days in Toronto, competing against 14 other girls in the teen competition.
